Being a baker is not only about producing fresh good tasting products but also to create a little magic.
Out of Canada, we get a request to make a cake for a grandmother living in a frail care facility in South Africa. All the fine details are discussed on Facebook messaging and the order is placed.
Arriving at the facility, the staff are caught off guard. A surprise birthday party for one of their residents. Given the circumstances (covid-19) I am not allowed into the facility. The excitement though is clearly felt. The cake and other treats are taken from me and the staff are off to find Ouma Emmie who turned 87 yesterday.
I would love to have met Ouma Emmie and seen the expression on her face when she saw her birthday cake but it was not to be.
We created a little magic yesterday and for that we will be always grateful for the opportunities created for bakers.
